[VI.] Summary and Suggestion
6.1 Purpose of practicum
As I know the purpose of the practicum is to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy, to practice English skills, to gain a broader regional and world view, to expose future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and the value of flexibility.
6.2 Procedure of practicum
First, the students on 7th semester have to submit the form to coordinator of the SEAMEO in home university as a registration. Each university have their own registration system that students have to follow. After pass the registration and the student is accepted, the student will notify by email and have some discussion with host university including the date of arrival in house country.
In the practicum, there are four steps, which is: observation, teaching assistants, teaching in the classroom (adequate 20 hours), and evaluation. The timeline will arranged by the host university that student have follow. For the evaluation itself, we called it grand/final demonstration. Student teacher will be evaluated by mentor and cooperative teacher while teaching in the classroom in the end of the day. And before it ends, we also have to write the report through blog report like this.
6.3 Outcomes of practicum
My outcomes of this practicum can be: improving my English skills, learning about new culture and Philippines educational system, knowing about cultural differences and similarities between Indonesia and Philippines, makes me more appreciate the meaning of difference, gain my knowledge globally, increasing my relation internationally, and make me confidence enough in teaching.
6.4 The challenges of practicum
Of course, the first challenges comes from the language. As a difference Philippines is ESL and Indonesia is EFL, personally, it really hard to speak in English to communicate, also we can not also speak local language. Second, it exactly about the cultures. It is really different in Indonesia, especially for the food, and religion that mostly in Philippines is Catholic while Indonesia is Muslim.
6.5 Overall impression
Overall, I really grateful and satisfied with this program. This program make the student teacher gaining new experience in studying abroad and learning more about the culture globally. This is unforgettable experience and I learn a lot from this program, and I hope it can be useful for future improvements.
6.6 Suggestion for future improvements
For suggestions, I really hope more country in the ASEAN join the program since this batch only offer two choice: Thailand and Philippines. And other things is perhaps it can be a special day in schedule for trip in host country, since most our schedule are for practicum only, I think its better to include a few day to explore without disturbing our teaching schedule, it really shame since we already going abroad but we did not explore more about the country itself.
